child abuse -- keywords and MeSH

This search statement was designed to retrieve records concerning child sexual abuse and those records corresponding to articles that cover child abuse in general but include information about child sexual abuse. Additional terms would be needed to recover all articles about non-sexual child abuse (e.g. "shaken baby", etc.) . One could make the search statement more specific but less comprehensive by requiring that "adversity" and the various trauma keywords appear in phrases including a term for childhood.

Nephrology filters

The Health Information Research Unit at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, in collaboration with the Kidney Clinical Research Unit at the University Western Ontario in London, Ontario, developed and tested MEDLINE filters that allow us to search for articles within a specific discipline (Nephrology).
These filters are based on:
Garg AX, Iansavichus AV, Wilczynski NL, Kastner M, Baier LA, Shariff SZ, Rehman F, Weir M, McKibbon KA, Haynes RB. Filtering Medline for a clinical discipline: diagnostic test assessment framework. BMJ. 2009 Sep 18;339:b3435. doi: 10.1136/bmj.b3435. PubMed PMID: 19767336. Available in: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/339/sep18_1/b3435?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=1&andorexacttitle=and&andorexacttitleabs=and&andorexactfulltext=and&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&sortspec=date&fdate=1/1/1981&resourcetype=HWCIT
The authors provide these filters at http://hiru.mcmaster.ca/hiru/HIRU_Hedges_Nephrology_Filters.aspx

Health Care Workers -- keywords and MeSH

Not all terms in this search statement will be relevant to all searches.  The searcher should, of course, remove all terms not relevant to his/her search.

Some of the search terms are not specific for to healthcare.  However, when these terms are used in PubMed, most records retrieved concern workers in healthcare institutions.  If one uses the statement below and finds that lots of records concerning workers in non-healthcare situtations are being retrieved, one could then create a compound search term that includes the less specific terms, as in
((hospital*[tiab] OR clinic[tiab] OR clinics[tiab] OR inpatient* OR outpatient* OR healthcare OR "health care" OR "longterm care" OR medical ....) AND (worker* OR staff OR personnel[tiab] OR manager* OR administrator* OR supervisor* OR intern* OR interns* OR resident* OR residents* OR technician* OR librarian* OR housekeeper*......))
The compound search term could then be OR'd in with the more specific terms.

(physician*[tiab] OR doctor*[tiab] OR allopath OR allopaths OR osteopath OR osteopaths OR homeopath OR homeopaths OR practitioner* OR specialist* OR generalist* OR "medical student" OR "medical students" OR "house officer" OR "house officers" OR Resident OR residents OR intern[tiab] OR interns[tiab] OR nurse[tiab] OR nurses[tiab] OR "nursing assistant" OR "nursing assistants" OR "nurse aide" OR "nurses aide" OR "nurse aides" OR "nurses aides" OR orderly OR orderlies OR dietician* OR psychologist* OR counselor* OR therapist* OR pharmacist* OR dentist*[tiab] OR hygeinist* OR phlebotomist* OR chiropracter* OR acupuncturist* OR anaesthesiologist* OR anesthesiologist* OR anaesthetist* OR anesthetist* OR perfusionist* OR surgeon*[tiab] OR pediatrician* OR paediatrician* OR obstetrician* OR gynecologist* OR gynaecologist* OR radiologist* OR sonographer* OR cardiologist* OR gastroenterologist* OR hepatologist* OR endocrinologist* OR diabetologist* OR internist* OR hospitalist* OR intensivist* OR rheumatologist* OR immunologist* OR dermatologist* OR allergist* OR otolaryngologist* OR otorhinolaryngologist* OR oncologist* OR hematologist* OR haematologist* OR orthopedist* OR orthopaedist* OR physiatrist* OR podiatrist* OR technician* OR pathologist* OR diener* OR cytologist* OR cytogeneticist* OR geneticist* OR hematopathologist* OR haematopathologist* OR neurologist* OR neurosurgeon* OR ophthalmologist* OR optician* OR urologist* OR nephrologist* OR pulmonologist* OR neonatologist* OR psychiatrist* OR administrator* OR supervisor* OR receptionist* OR personnel[tiab] OR team OR staff OR worker* OR researcher OR researchers OR librarian* OR informationist* OR housekeeper* OR janitor* OR officer* OR responder* OR paramedic* OR laboratorian* OR coordinator* OR navigator* OR manager* OR attendant* OR cashier OR cashiers OR accountant OR accountants OR "Health Personnel"[Mesh] OR "Education, Medical"[Mesh] OR "Students, Health Occupations"[Mesh])

Nurse-authored research articles -- keywords

This strategy was contributed by ConcepciĆ³n Campos-Asensio.  It's the filter for nurse-authored research articles published in: McGraw MP. Narrowing PubMed searches to nursing-related articles. Comput Inform Nurs. 2009 Sep-Oct;27(5):272-5. PubMed PMID: 19726919.

one-to-many study design -- keywords -- not for PubMed

This search strategy doesn't work well in PubMed. I decided to post the "one-to-many" search strategy on the PubMed blog to remind myself that I might end up having to perform a Google Scholar search for this concept. I usually only try Google Scholar after becoming discouraged with other options (including PubMed).

statins -- keywords

The first search statement shown below was produced by ORing together the synonyms from the MICROMEDEX POISINDEX Managements article "LOVASTATIN AND RELATED DRUGS" and the American trade names from AHFS Drug Information. (CAS numbers from the MICROMEDEX article were not included.) Alternate forms of investigational names were inserted.

("HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors" OR "HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor" OR statin OR statins OR LOVASTATIN OR "L-154803" OR "L154803" OR "L 154803" OR "MB-530B" OR "MB530B" OR "MB 530B" OR "6-alpha methylcompactin" OR Mevinacor OR Mevinic OR Mevinolin OR Mevlor OR "MK-803" OR "MK803" OR "MK 803" OR Monacolin OR "MSD-803" OR "MSD803" OR "MSD 803"OR mevacor OR altoprev OR CERIVASTATIN OR "BAY W6228" OR "BAY-W6228" OR "BAYW6228" OR FLUVASTATIN OR "XU-62-320" OR "XU62-320" OR "XU 62-320" OR lescol OR ATORVASTATIN OR lipitor OR caduet OR "CI-981" OR "CI981" OR "CI 981" OR PITAVASTATIN OR Itavastatin OR Nisvastatin OR "NK-104" OR "NK104" OR "NK 104" OR "NKS-104" OR "NKS104" OR "NKS 104" OR "P-872441" OR "P872441" OR "P 872441" OR PRAVASTATIN OR "CS-514" OR "CS514" OR "CS 514" OR Eptastatin OR "3-beta-Hydroxycompactin" OR Pravachol OR ROSUVASTATIN OR Crestor OR "ZD4522" OR "ZD 4522" OR "ZD-4522" OR SIMVASTATIN OR "L-644128-OOOU" OR "L644128OOOU" OR "L 644128-OOOU" OR "MK-733" OR "MK733" OR "MK 733" OR Synvinolin OR zocor )

The search statement (see above) was then test-run in PubMed. After the test run, it was clear that phrases and terms not recognized by PubMed would have to be removed as too many irrelevant results were being retrieved. I've removed the unrecognized phrases and terms from the search statement below:

("Sleep environment" OR "sleep environments" OR ((bed OR beds ) AND (share OR shared OR sharing OR shares)) OR bedsharing OR "bed sharing" OR bed-sharing OR "sleeping arrangements" OR co-sleep* OR cosleep* OR co-bed* OR cobed*)

I produce keyword searches primarily for the purpose of searching PREMEDLINE and OLD MEDLINE. In PubMed, applying a Neonate/Infant age group limit to a search will limit that search to MEDLINE and exclude all PREMEDLINE and OLD MEDLINE results. For the co-sleeping concept, there is no good MeSH term so to retrieve MEDLINE results, I might perform the keyword search with a Neonate/Infant age group limit, and then, to retrieve PREMEDLINE/OLD MEDLINE/un-indexed PubMed Central records, I would remove the limits, add an infant/neonate concept in keywords, and add -- NOT MEDLINE[sb] -- at the end of the search statement. My infant/neonate keyword search statement is also available via the blog.
